The average user may not make the difference between a camcorder and other products capable of recording video pictures. The only way to express the specificity of the device is by identifying the portable and recording features as primary functions. These functions set this tool apart from cell phones with built in digital cameras.
As compared to tape-based camcorders, a digital video camcorder does not use magnetic tape to record and store data. Digital devices have a built-in hard disk drive and a memory card that allow for storage and the transfer of data to other media quickly and efficiently. The quality of the filmed material is excellent for digital video recording: you don't have to worry about color blurring or image fading. The disadvantage could be in the case of the background blur. While a digital video camcorder may show a flat and featureless background, a high-quality analog camera could show more details with rough textures of the background.
The average user can operate the digital video camcorder without any difficulty. And everybody wants to get the maximum of features for as low a cost as possible; the preference goes towards the automatic designs. Manufacturers do indeed offer a wide range of electronics to choose from, some come with very subtle improvements of sensor-sensitivity, others drastically reduce the background noise and the list of features does not stop here.
A digital video recorder is affordable for an average budget without any problem whatsoever. We find more emphasis on controls and shooting capabilities at the other end of the consumer market with professional operators. Among professional features we can mention progressive-scan frame rates, highly sensitive lenses or increased external audio input. An average digital video camcorder does not stand a comparison with professional equipment.
Manufacturers make progresses with the design of camcorders, and new categories keep flooding the market. You may sometimes not be able to tell which model is the right one for you, and therefore you may have to research well before making a decision concerning the right model for you. Have a look on ratings, check features and see what other people have to say.
